"Microgravity, Science and Technology: an overview"
ABSTRACT
The XIX, and even more so the XX, were undoubtedly the centuries of technology. In 160 years (R. Trevithick, 24/12/1801 - Y. Gagarin, 12/4/1961), man has gone from carrying loads on the back of a mule to sending himself into space. The technological race has continued with exponential growth, not only carrying man on the moon after only 8 years, but bringing him back again. In 1936 the Turing' ENIGMA occupied a huge room, and was capable of only one thing. Today we all have in our pockets super computers capable of connecting us with the whole world in real time.
Microgravity is the new frontier that man has been exploring for only a few decades. Discovered almost by chance following the lunar missions, today it has become the ultimate laboratory in which every scientist sooner or later tries to do an experiment. Experiments today require the development of dedicated and increasingly complex technologies, whose design and implementation often represent a more daring challenge than the experiment itself. Microgravity thus triggered a perpetual motion machine, the science that requires the development of new technologies based on new scientific advances.
