Theoretical Physics

Sezione Fisica Teorica

Coordinator Prof. Pietro Santorelli

In Naples Theoretical Physics has a long tradition of excellence and contributes actively to the life and development of the Department, by contributing to every field of activity, such as research, teaching and third mission.

We distinguish for our skill and high synergy with other Sections and national and international collaborations as evidenced by the funding of our activity by national and international institutions, by participations and organization of international conferences and by ability to attract PhD and post-graduate students from prestigious foreign realities as well.

The details can be found in the activity data sheets.
Our traditional strengths in research are: mathematical methods applied to quantum physics and field theory, cosmology, theory and phenomenology of fundamental interactions, statistical mechanics with applications to complex and biological systems. Teaching and history of physics sector deserves a separate discourse, besides carrying out research, it plays a key role in the third mission at Departmental and University level.
The section consists of 24 staff members: 2 RTD (fixed term researcher), 7 RTI (permanent researchers), 10 PA (associate professors), 6 PO (full professors).

Details on the research activities of Theoretical Physics Group

Our section is deeply committed in teaching at all levels. All members of our staff, reserchers and professors, teach a course in the three years degree in Physics and/or a course in other departments. The curriculum in theoretical physics is followed with interest by students, with a  25% of the total number of students enrolled in the Master's Degree in Physics.

The quality of our commitment is highly appreciated by students who often choose members of our Department as supervisors for thesis about several issues in modern physics. For example, from January 2016 to November 2017 we supported as supervisors a total of 53 undergaduates. Many of our graduates continue their studies with PhD studies abroad, even in prestigious universities. On the other hand, our ability to attract students and young foreign scholars (such as PhDs, post-docs and researcher associates) allows us to compete with other universities at international level and not to suffer for "brain drain".

Regarding our research activities, detailed in the data sheets, we have published (together with other public research institutes colleagues) about 200 ISI publications and several proceedings and books, with ninety foreign collaborators, as further proof of our presence on the international scene.
