il Prof. Giuseppe Longo, del dipartimento di fisica "Ettore Pancini" dell'Università Federico II, terrà un Colloquium intitolato:

"The coming revolution of Data driven Discovery (a fourth Methodological Paradigm of Science)"

ABSTRACT

We live in a world of data. Data which, through intelligent algorithms control and support almost every aspect of our everyday life. While the social and the economic implications of this silent revolution are widely discussed in the specialised literature as well as in the media and on the WEB, much less known is what it implies for science. Few people recognize, in fact, that the largest producers of big data are modern scientific experiments such as the Large Hadron Collider, satellites, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope or the Square Kilometer Array and its precursors. Instruments which produce from 100 Terabytes up to 1 Petabyte of data per day. This amount of data cannot by any means be processed, analysed or understood using traditional methods and requires a massive use of automatic processing and learning and, in ultimate analysis, of artificial intelligence. But size and complexity are only a part of the story, and perhaps also the less challenging. Data Driven discovery promises in fact to open new pathways to modern science. In almost all fields of science, almost all models and theory are derived in order to explain correlations among measured parameters which are first detected as patterns by our brain which is incapable to uncover correlation in more than 3 dimensions. Modern data are highly dimensional, with hundreds if not thousands of parameters and machines can find patterns and structures in any number of dimensions. We shall discuss why this new approach were humans and machine cooperate in understanding complex data will allow us to achieve a much deeper understanding of the physical world.
