Subnuclear Physics
Coordinator Prof. Paolo MASSAROTTI
The research themes of the Section cover various aspects of the study of fundamental interactions and include:
- Physics of proton-proton interactions at very high energies
- Physics of neutrinos
- Physics of rare processes
- High luminosity flavour physics
The members of the Section, in close collaboration with the INFN, are included in positions of responsibility in frontier scientific programs in both national (Gran Sasso National Laboratories, Frascati and Southern National Laboratories) and international (CERN-Geneva, KEK-Tsukuba) Research Laboratories.
The realization of complex experiments implies collaboration with high-tech industries, favoring interactions with the territory and technology transfer. Beyond the aspects related to specific experiments, the internal skills of the Section include:
- design and construction of experimental apparatus
- development of particle detectors
- nuclear emulsions and automatic microscopy
- development of tools and methodologies for data analysis
- realization and management of complex distributed computing instruments
- development and realization of trigger electronics and data acquisition
- microelectronics and study of radiation damage
- detector applications to interdisciplinary problems
- organic electronics
- Detailed sheets of research activities in Subnuclear Physics.
The members of the Section carry out teaching activities in the Bachelor's and Master's Degree Courses in Physics, where they contribute to the curricula in Subnuclear Physics and Electronics. They also carry out teaching activities in the Degree courses in Optics and Optometry, in various Degree courses in Engineering, Computer Science, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biotechnology, Orthoptics and Ophthalmological Assistance, Speech Therapy and Physiotherapy, Medical Radiology Techniques.
In the last three years, approximately 12 Bachelor's students and 11 Master's students have graduated in Physics with teachers of the Section. 6 PhD students, 5 research fellows, 2 foreign scholarship holders with post-doc positions and 3 Visiting Researchers carry out their research activity within the activities of interest of the Section.
Four members of the Section are also part of the Teaching Board of the Doctorate in Fundamental and Applied Physics.
