Educational Activities
1. Structure of the Training Offer
The total mandatory workload is set at 18 ECTS credits. The main goal of the training offer is to enable PhD students to deepen advanced research topics related to Quantum Technologies. The total workload is divided into:
a) 12 ECTS credits of courses with exams related to research topics (or expanding knowledge) in the field of Quantum Technologies;
b) 6 ECTS credits of other educational activities, which may not require a final evaluation.
2. Courses with exams on research topics or knowledge enhancement (12 ECTS)
The types of these courses are as follows:
A) Master's degree courses (LM): These courses are very useful for harmonizing the preparation of PhD students from different institutions, particularly for international students who may not have sufficient foundational preparation for the research project they need to develop. For each course attended, a number of ECTS credits equal to or fewer than those awarded in the LM course will be recognized, depending on the evaluation methodology adopted by the instructor. Unless there are exceptional cases, which must be submitted to the PhD College/Coordinator, it is not possible to take more than one LM course.
B) PhD-specific courses of the PhD QT program: These courses are published annually on the website by clicking here or at the bottom of the page in catalogue courses section.
C) PhD courses from partner universities within the PhD QT program that are thematically relevant to the PhD QT.
The capacity of PhD courses (types B and C) cannot be fewer than 3 ECTS credits.
D) PhD courses from other institutions: Recently, excellent university institutions that focus exclusively on doctoral-level education (e.g., SISSA, GSSI, SSM, etc.) have developed. These institutions offer high-level training on very specific topics. For these courses, up to 6 ECTS credits will be recognized, subject to prior approval by the PhD College/Coordinator.
E) PhD schools with final evaluation: In specific cases, subject to the judgment of the Coordinator/College, doctoral schools that provide a certified final evaluation may be considered as courses with exams, awarding up to a maximum of 4 ECTS credits.
Other Educational Activities (6 ECTS)
These activities are designed to complete the training path and mainly include:
A) "Soft-skill" courses up to a maximum of 3 ECTS, in line with what is offered in major Italian universities.
B) Other educational activities totaling 6 ECTS (e.g., PhD schools, specific lecture cycles, seminars). In particular, the PhD student must attend at least one school related to their specific field, and interdisciplinary or transversal schools are strongly encouraged. Participation in schools is strongly incentivized through the preferential use of funds allocated to each PhD student. For schools/seminars, 1 ECTS will be awarded for every 8 hours of activity, with a maximum of 3 ECTS credits. In particular, the PhD student must attend, during the three years of their PhD, at least one of the national schools organized by the PhD QT. Attendance at this school corresponds to 3 ECTS. If the PhD student presents their research activity during this school, the number of ECTS credits awarded is 4.
C) Other educational activities may be considered with prior authorization from the PhD College/Coordinator.
Special Regulations
Given that it is not possible to foresee all the types of PhD paths, which are rapidly evolving and may have specific conditions affecting the training activity, the PhD College reserves the right to review each situation on a case-by-case basis and authorize paths that do not follow the proposed framework.
Responsibility of the Supervisor
The supervisor must play an active role as the primary interface between the PhD student and the PhD College/Coordinator. Together with the supervisor, the PhD student must discuss/organize the training path to ensure it is balanced and aligned with their scientific development.
Timeline
