Physics of the Universe
Coordinator Prof. Giovanni COVONE
The Section of Physics of the Universe brings together professors and researchers of the Department of Physics who carry out research in the fields of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Theoretical and Observational Cosmology, Gravitational Physics, Geophysics and Observational and Computational Seismology and pertaining to the competitive sector 02/C1 and the Scientific-Disciplinary Sectors FIS/05 and FIS/06. The section also includes about twenty Research Fellows, Scholarship Holders and PhD students.
The Section works in strong synergy with Public Research Institutions such as INAF, INFN, INGV, ASI, and develops various collaborations with members of other Sections.
The Section as a whole presents a high scientific production, with a total of over 300 publications in the last three years, numerous national and international research projects, projects with companies (ENI-RFI, Leonardo). The members of the Section also report to the Spin-off RISS (Real-time Innovative Solutions for Seismology). The section refers to the Research Infrastructure of National Interest INFO – Irpinia Near Fault Observatory – integrated in the EPOS platform.
The research topics of the Physics of the Universe section are the following:
- High Energy Astrophysics
- Astroinformatics and Machine Learning applied to Astrophysics
- Cosmology, Gravitational Physics
- Dark Matter, Galactic Physics
- Exoplanets and Exobiology
- Earthquake Early Warning
- Analysis and models for microseismicity
- Induced Seismicity
- Seismic Tomography
- Technologies for geophysics
- Detailed sheets of research activities of Physics of the Universe.
From the training point of view, two curricula of the Master's Degree in Physics of the Department, with strong attraction for the purposes of enrollment also for the Bachelor's Degree, are mainly based on the skills of the Section. In the last three years the Section has followed about sixty Bachelor's and Master's Degree Theses, has provided several Doctoral courses for the Doctorate in Physics, Structural Engineering, Geotechnics and Seismic Risk and Data Science. The members of the section are the referents of various bilateral agreements with foreign universities and Erasmus programs. Numerous Third Mission initiatives have involved the Section at Departmental and University level.
